The school counselor is especially trained to help students realize their fullest potential as unique human beings. A major goal of counseling is to help students better themselves.
Therefore, students need to be aware of their interests and how they relate to others. They should determine how best to use their abilities to get what they want out of life.
Ideally, the counselor and the student work together to:
a. Determine goals.
b. Discuss feelings and interests.
c. Explore alternatives.
d. Make decisions.
The counselor can provide information about jobs, careers, colleges, vocational schools, military training, etc. The counselor can also provide testing to determine interests and abilities of students. An ‘open door’ policy exists in the counseling program. This means that if you need to see the counselor immediately, the door is always open to you; unless they are busy with another student. In which case you can leave your name with the high school secretary, and at first opportunity, the counselor will help you.
